Urban Turbans Basic Millinery Course

The Basic Millinery Course takes you through the process of making three different fashion hats, from basic design all the way to the finished product.

All the work you produce is yours to keep, so you come out of the course with 3 finished hats of completely your own design.

The course is taught one-on-one by Urban Turbans' award-winning milliner, Diane Dudley. All lessons take place are conducted in the Devonport studio, where you will have exclusive use of Diane's time, skills and expressed knowledge.

The Basic Millinery Course totals 50-60 hours, organised to fit your schedule - weekend and evening tuition is available. Session structure is individually designed to fit you. After you've finished the basic course, you have several options to continue further into more advanced millinery if desired.

In addition to the basic millinery course detailed on this page, Urban Turbans offers more specific and customised training. Many people only want to learn to make one type of hat, for instance, and we are happy to provide such tuition. Please feel free to enquire if you have a specific requirement.

Course Content

	Parisisol Blocking, Shaping & Trimming You will be taught how to block and shape a sisal hat. This will produce a hat which you will trim in your own style.
	Felt Blocking, Shaping & Trimming In this workshop you will make a ladies felt hat for winter. It may be a large or small hat, which you will trim in your own style.
	Sinamay Blocking, Shaping & Trimming You will be taught how to make a fashion hat using Sinamay - the type of hat you can wear to the races. You will learn to trim in sinamay.

Examples of the type of hats you will be making are on display in our Studio.

• All prices are in $NZ
• 50% of tuition fees to be paid before commencement.
• Balance of tuition fees to be paid on completion of the tuition.
• Materials paid upon ordering.

Materials

All materials will be charged to you at cost price + GST. Prices are approximate, and may fluctuate depending on exchange rate. The schedule below sets out the prices for the basic materials of the 3 hats.

Prices for trim are highly variable, and have not been included below. These prices will depend on the trim you choose.

Indicative List of Materials

You may wish to shop for other fabrics needed to trim, bind or line the hats.
